MS Project allows you to plan, control and oversee all phases of a project. You start off with establishing a project calendar which dictates the working hours of the project. You can then create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) of all the tasks you want MS Project to track. This WBS is then put into a timeline by establishing relationships between the tasks as well as any constraints and deadlines. Resources can then be assigned to the tasks to control the effort and duration for each task. After working out any kinks, you have your plan.
Next, MS Project can help avoid one of the major problems, Scope Creep. When your project Sponsor/Customer approves your plan, you can save a Baseline for the project. This Baseline will then be compared to the actual progress reports that come pouring in during the life of the project.
